Film Camera Reviews with a word on why collect that camera

Leica M3 ° street, photojournalism
Hasselblad 500C/M ° square fashion
Nikon F ° press reportage, sport
Rolleiflex TLR ° portraits
Bronica 645 ° aerial
Contax IIa/IIIa ° affordable Leica
Olympus OM2n ° low light

Polaroid Land Camera ° novelty, studio test
Kodak Brownie ° novelty
Nikonos III 35mm ° underwater film camera

Look for whether it’s been tested, and serviced. You want to look for all of the standard things you need to know about any camera, ie: fungus in the lens and finder, haze, balsam separation, corrosion of any metal parts, film advanced smoothness, etc. The potential for light leaks is always a concern especially when dealing with a camera that has an accordion bellows.

You will also want to make sure that the focus on the lens matches up with the focus on your finder. The operation of this camera is fairly simple so there isn’t a lot I guess work with that. Of course the external condition is also important, that will go a long way to show how well it was cared for. Have a plan on where and who you can go to to get it serviced. Chances are good you’ll have something that can serve you well into the future.

Getting Started

Understand Your Motivation

Before diving into collecting film cameras, consider why you’re interested in this hobby. Is it the historical aspect, the craftsmanship, the art of photography, or all of the above? Understanding your motivation will help you stay focused and make informed decisions.

If you’re collecting the camera gear used by a particular photographer, browse our stories as this interests us as we delve into each camera’s masterpieces. Many of the greats of street photography from the mid-century used a Rolleiflex: Robert Doisneau, Vivian Maier and more. Gregory Halpern has some. Rolleiflex and Hasselblad made the best medium format cameras with the Bronica 645 system also collectible because of its aerial photography portfolio. These cameras produced the fashion photo shoots for Vogue magazine in the hands of Helmut Newton, Andy Warhol and the artists.

Research and Education

Start by learning about the history of photography, the evolution of camera technology, and famous photographers. This knowledge will be invaluable when evaluating and collecting cameras.

The standards are 35mm cameras such as the Leica, Nikon and Olympus; the medium format cameras Hasselblad and Rolleiflex cameras favoured by the portrait masters of photography from the film era.

Specialty collectors focus on Polaroid Land Camera, the Kodak Brownie and Contax IIa/IIIa, or my personal favourite: Nikonos III 35mm underwater film camera. Comment on the bottom of the page.

Define Your Focus

Decide whether you want to collect specific types of cameras (e.g., rangefinders, SLRs, medium format), cameras from certain eras, or those produced by particular manufacturers. Focusing your collection can make it more manageable and fulfilling. We manage the urge to buy by reminding ourselves of the shelf space for our collection – we are looking for the best example available condition only need one of every type.

My personal focus is maintaining working cameras for my passion and occupation – shooting, developing and printing film cameras. Photography has systems to maintain work flow through the studio and darkroom and it is fun and educational to put them together

One fascinating branch of camera collecting is assembling a camera kit for a working press photographer – two or three bodies, prime and zoom lenses, flash heads and bags. Head over to the Nikon F page to join our journey of putting together a newsroom photography department.

Maintaining a working darkroom to the style and standard of a press photographer has provided a few tips and things to look for. I still like to keep it simple with Ilford Multigrade darkroom head but I ask why shoot film and then not print it? Shooting film and scanning to digital is missing the joy of creating an image in the darkroom. Enter our darkroom here.

Online Marketplaces

Websites like eBay and specialized camera stores offer a vast selection of cameras. Research sellers and check their ratings and reviews for a reputable buying experience.

We are trialling free ads in the comments of each camera’s page for genuine sellers.

The Hasselblad square format camera using 120 roll film is the Rolls Royce of film cameras. Helmut Newton, and the greats of Vogue and fashion, David Bailey all gravitated towards the Hasselblad which is now owned by DJI the drone company, if you’re looking for the cheapest way to own a ‘blad.

Evaluating and Assessing Cameras

Condition

Inspect the camera’s physical condition, including the lens, shutter, film compartment, and viewfinder.

Look for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Mint condition cameras are the most valuable.

The Nikon F series were standard issue for newspaper photographers such as Rob Walls, Horst Faas and Tim Page and they hit their peak in the 1980s. If you’re here looking for the recommendation for a classic 35mm film camera, the Nikon is top of the list. The big investment is the glass. The 70-200mm zoom lenses were the benchmark for fast telephoto zoom lenses, the go to lens for low-light, sports, wildlife, concerts, weddings, portraits and everyday shooting. Good photographers use the prime lenses: 35mm, 50mm and something around the 100 to 130 range for detailed portraiture.

Rarity and Collectibility

Research the camera’s rarity and historical significance. Limited-edition models or cameras used by famous photographers can be highly collectible.

The classic functionality of the Nikonos III underwater camera made famous by Jacques Cousteau, Rod and Valerie Taylor, Walter Dean, Neville Coleman and even this author owned one until it blew apart in the aircraft above Fiji. Remember they are made for increased pressure, not a decrease in an unpressurised plane, and unscrew the lens for travelling. Underwater cameras need a sturdy hand grip and arm for the flash gun in its waterproof housing, a view finder that clips into the top of the camera and a thumb release on the hand grip.

Authenticity, Accessories and Documentation

Beware of counterfeit or modified cameras. Verify the authenticity of vintage cameras through reputable sources and experts.

Original accessories, manuals, and packaging can significantly enhance a camera’s value.

Make sure the camera comes with its original components whenever possible.

With the prices of the legendary Leica camera sitting above $2,000 dollars, check your dealer is real. The Leica was made famous by Magnum Photos, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and made some of the foundation images during the growth of photojournalism.

Maintenance and Restoration

Cleaning and Storage

Regularly clean and store your cameras in a dry, cool environment away from direct sunlight. Use proper storage containers to prevent dust and moisture damage. Isopropyl alcohol is good to clean ‘sticky’ plastic camera bodies which have deteriorated over time.

Basic Repairs

Learn basic camera maintenance, such as cleaning lenses and replacing light seals. Consult online tutorials and consider taking a camera repair course.

Professional Restoration

Invest in quality display cabinets or shelves to showcase your collection. Use acid-free materials for framing and storing photographs.

For valuable or antique cameras requiring extensive restoration, consult a professional camera restorer. They can ensure that the camera retains its historical and functional value.

Preserving Your Collection
