A Brief History of Sacré-Cœur

The story of Sacré-Cœur begins in the late 19th century, a tumultuous time for France. Following the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune, the country was in need of healing and reconciliation.

It was in this context that the construction of Sacré-Cœur was proposed as a symbol of penance, hope, and national unity.

Designed by architect Paul Abadie, the basilica’s architectural style is a harmonious blend of Romanesque and Byzantine influences, with its iconic white travertine stone contrasting beautifully against the Parisian skyline. Construction began in 1875 and continued for nearly four decades, with the basilica finally consecrated in 1919, after the end of World War I.
