Meet the Frackers: Origin Energy ASX:ORG company information

Origin Energy Limited – ASX code ORG – is an integrated energy company in Australia. Origin Energy is also involved in the generation of electricity, and the wholesale and retail sale of electricity and gas. Through their joint venture Australia Pacific LNG plant on Curtis Island in Queensland, Origin supplies 30% of east coast gas and exports LNG to Asia.

28 June 2023 – Origin acquired a 5% equity interest in Newcastle based clean-tech company Allegro Energy and agreed to a pilot of their long duration battery at Eraring Power Station.

In September 2017 Origin announced the sale of its conventional upstream oil and gas business (called Lattice Energy) to Beach Energy. This included interests in the Otway Gas Project; the Bass Gas Project; various interests in the Cooper Basin, Perth Basin, Bonaparte Basin; and interests in New Zealand, including the Kupe Gas Project

9 November 2022 – Origin Energy Limited (Origin) has sold 100% of its interest in the Beetaloo Basin joint venture to Tamboran (B1) Pty Limited.

9 November 2022 – Tamboran (B1), an entity 50/50 owned by Tamboran Resources Limited (ASX: TBN) and another shareholder, US oil and gas billionaire Bryan Sheffield, will now assume control of the Beetaloo Basin joint venture (77.5%) in partnership with Falcon Oil and Gas Australia (22.5%). 

Origin reviewed their remaining gas exploration permits (not including their Australia Pacific LNG) is progressing, with a view to exiting those permits over time.

“Completion of the sale of Origin’s interest in the Beetaloo joint venture, and intention to exit other upstream exploration assets over time, will allow greater flexibility to allocate capital towards our strategic priorities to grow cleaner energy and customer solutions and deliver reliable energy through the transition,” Origin CEO Frank Calabria said.

Tamboran also owns other unconventional gas resources in the Northern Territory and Beetaloo Basin. Tamboran will pay Origin 5.5% of wellhead revenues as royalties from three Beetaloo gas permits if they are drilled and has signed an agreement with Tamboran to purchase gas of up to 36.5 petajoules per annum over 10 years.

“Origin will undertake a strategic review of all remaining exploration permits (excluding its interests in Australia Pacific LNG) with a view to exiting those permits over time,” Origin CEO Frank Calabria said.
