Mitsui & Co subsidiary Mitsui Oil Exploration’s MOEX Offshore had a 10% stake in the Deepwater Horizon well in the Gulf of Mexico through a subsidiary, and in May, 2011, MOEX agreed to pay US$1.07 billion to settle British Petroleum claims against it over the explosion and oil spill at the well.

Mitsui & Co participated in the Western Australia LNG project in 1985, in 2010 participated with Anadarko Petroleum Corporation in shale gas projects in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and in 2015 participated in shale gas production in Texas.

In 2013, they were partners in the cancelled Browse LNG Project in Western Australia – a joint venture between Woodside Petroleum (Operator), Shell, BP, BHP andJapan Australia LNG (MIMI Browse) (a joint venture of Mitsubishi and Mitsui).

Upstream development and trading in oil and gas, is Mitsui & Co’s largest line of business, accounting for over half of its consolidated EBITDA and net earnings.

Australian Worldwide Exploration Limited’s segments include South East Australia, Western Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Indonesia and Exploration Activities.

South East Australia includes production and sale of gas, condensate and Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the BassGas and Casino gas projects. In early 2001 AWE acquired 44.5% of the undeveloped Yolla field in Bass Strait. In mid 2003, AWE acquired a 25% interest in VIC/P44. Santos is another leaseholder.

The offshore Casino gas field project incorporates two development wells (Casino-4 and Casino-5), connected to an undersea gas pipeline. The pipeline was drilled underneath the shoreline west of Port Campbell to protect the sensitive coastal area.

Western Australia includes production and sale of crude oil, gas and condensate from the Cliff Head oil project and an oil and gas fields in the Perth Basin, onshore, Western Australia. The Waitsia gas field in the Perth Basin is ranked one of the largest gas fields ever discovered onshore in Australia. Waitsia is a joint venture between Kerry Stokes’ Beach Energy and Mitsui and Co.

New Zealand includes production and sale of crude oil from the Tui Area oil project.

The United States includes production and sale of gas, LNG and condensate from the Sugarloaf AMI in Texas, USA
