Premier Chris Minns: Please protect NSW public native forests from logging

Premier Chris Minns
52 Martin Place,
Sydney NSW 2000

Dear Premier,

Please protect NSW public native forests from logging.

It is with great concern that I write to you regarding the ongoing logging in public native forests.

It is deeply shocking that such ecologically significant native forests are being cleared in the midst of both an extinction crisis and climate crisis, at a substantial ongoing cost to taxpayers, when we know we need to be protecting habitat and keeping carbon sinks for climate stability. Neither the forests nor the animal populations have recovered from the destruction of the 2019/20 bushfires.

The Forestry Corporation spin doctors talk sustainability, when what is actually happening in the forests is a last ditch, smash and grab liquidation of the timber resource at the expense of all the other forest values. Our water catchments and carbon stores are being damaged and the logging leads to increased fire risk from greater forest flammability. Environmental protection laws are inadequate.

The recent Branching Out report by Blueprint Institute, documents that by protecting forests now for biodiversity, carbon sequestration, water preservation and tourism values, our forests will generate economic returns for the community and the government.

Let’s join Victoria and WA and see this destruction end this year. Like Premier Wran is remembered for the Rainforest protected areas and Premier Carr for the extensive areas of oldgrowth forest protected, your legacy could be the protection of the public land native forests that build connectivity into the reserve system and give our unique wildlife a fighting chance in a changing climate.

Yours sincerely,
