Should Kevin Spacey Remain Cancelled?

The concept of “cancel culture” has become a prominent and often contentious topic in recent years. It refers to the practice of withdrawing support for public figures or companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive.

One of the most high-profile cases of this phenomenon involves actor Kevin Spacey, whose career came to a screeching halt following numerous allegations of sexual misconduct. As the dust settles and new developments arise, a pressing question emerges: should Kevin Spacey remain cancelled?

People have found a platform on social media where gossip spreads rapidly and even lies and false accusations become news within minutes. I feel for Mr Spacey because I’ve been cancelled, not because the allegations of pedophilia, rape and unwanted sexual advances were true – that gossip was mostly politically motivated – I feel for the many men and women being affected by rumours spread by social media. Defamation lawyers tell me that the court rooms hearing allegations of sexual misconduct is the fastest growing area of legal profession.

There are limits to how men can address these allegations, especially when it has gone beyond the social media into our circle of influence in our workplace or small towns behind our backs. Hating someone because everyone else is, or someone told you too, sounds like a scene out of 1940s Europe. I’m prepared to hear Mr Spacey and I wish that people would not be so hasty to judge others based on gossip or the prejudice of others.

It seems that someone so vilified and even hated as Kevin Spacey deserves at least to be heard. He has reached out to those he may have hurt and repeatedly apologised. But hasn’t and shouldn’t have to apologise for things he hasn’t done to people seeking attention. Mr Spacey’s many legal cases have all found him Not Guilty.

The Rise and Fall of Kevin Spacey

Kevin Spacey was once a titan of the entertainment industry. With two Academy Awards under his belt and critically acclaimed performances in films like “American Beauty” and “The Usual Suspects,” as well as the hit TV series “House of Cards,” Spacey’s talent and influence were undeniable.

However, in October 2017, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making a sexual advance towards him when he was just 14 years old. This allegation opened the floodgates leading to a slew of accusations of similar patterns of predatory behavior. In October 2022, a jury took less than an hour to unanimously agree that Kevin Spacey did not molest actor Anthony Rapp in 1986.

Responding to new allegations aired in the Spacey Unmasked documentary in 2024, he wrote on X/Twitter: “Over the last week, I have repeatedly requested that Channel 4 afford me more than seven days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters.

“Channel 4 has refused on the basis that they feel that asking for a response in seven days to new, anonymised and non-specific allegations is a ‘fair opportunity’ for me to refute any allegations made against me. I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network’s one-sided ‘documentary’ about me in their desperate attempt for ratings.”

He’s been found Not Guilty

The repercussions for Spacey following the initial allegations were swift and severe. He was removed from “House of Cards,” a series that had come to define Netflix’s original programming. Spacey was also replaced by Christopher Plummer in Ridley Scott’s film “All the Money in the World,” a move that was unprecedented given the film was nearly completed. In 2022 Mr Spacey was ordered to pay $30.9 million to the makers of “House of Cards” for violating his contract by sexually harassing crew members.

Legal battles ensued, with some cases being dismissed and others withdrawn. In 2019, criminal charges against him were dropped in Massachusetts after the accuser refused to testify. A lawsuit filed by an anonymous accuser was dismissed in 2021 due to the statute of limitations.

In 2023 Kevin Spacey was found Not Guilty of all charges of sexual assault during his time at the Old Vic theatre artistic director. Mr Spacey has admitted and apologised for his flirtatious manner with his co-workers and the Old Vic who have also moved on “how better to call out this behaviour in future“.

“The Old Vic was in a unique position of having a Hollywood star at the helm around whom existed a cult of personality,” said the Old Vic. The Old Vic found it has “not been possible to verify any of these allegations, and it is important to note that Kevin Spacey has not commented on them. The review cannot therefore make any findings of fact about the alleged misconduct.”

Kevin Spacey has never been found guilty of any crime, anywhere.

An Ethical Debate

The debate over whether Kevin Spacey should remain cancelled hinges on several ethical considerations. On one hand, the severity and number of allegations against him paint a troubling picture of his behavior. Many argue that allowing him to return to the public eye without facing full accountability sets a dangerous precedent, undermining the voices of survivors of sexual misconduct.

On the other hand, some advocate for the possibility of redemption and rehabilitation. They argue that if Spacey is willing to acknowledge his wrongdoings, make amends, and demonstrate genuine change, he should be given a second chance. This perspective often cites examples of other public figures who have successfully rehabilitated their careers after similar scandals.

Others believe Kevin Spacey’s story that he behaved inappropriately in some cases but this was not illegal. He says that he definitely will be behaving differently in future.

Public Perception and Industry Response

Public opinion on Spacey’s potential return to the entertainment industry remains divided. While some fans continue to support him, others are vehemently opposed.

The industry itself has shown little inclination to re-embrace Spacey. His attempts to return to acting, such as his appearance in the little-known film “Billionaire Boys Club,” have largely gone unnoticed. Since the documentary was shown, Mr Spacey’s peers have called for his return to the industry, including Liam Neeson, Stephen Fry, and Sharon Stone.

Stephen Fry said that to compare Mr Spacey “with the likes of Harvey Weinstein” and “to continue to harass and hound him, to devote a whole documentary to accusations that simply do not add up to crimes. How can that be considered proportionate and justified?”

Should He Remain Cancelled?

Ultimately, whether Kevin Spacey should remain cancelled is a complex and deeply personal question. It forces us to grapple with our values, the possibility of change, and the importance of accountability. While some may believe in offering a path to redemption, others feel that the gravity of Spacey’s alleged actions warrants a permanent exclusion from the public sphere.

The discussion surrounding Kevin Spacey is emblematic of a larger cultural shift. The #MeToo movement has fundamentally altered the way society views and addresses sexual misconduct, particularly in powerful industries like Hollywood where “cult of personality” around stars is palpable. The expectation of accountability and the demand for systemic change are stronger than ever.

As society continues to evolve and confront these challenging issues, it is crucial to listen to and support survivors, ensuring their voices are not overshadowed by the powerful figures they speak against. Responsible members of society are aware of the pitfalls of social media and fake news actors. In the case of Kevin Spacey, only time will tell how his story will unfold and what it will mean for the future of cancel culture.

All that said, Kevin Spacey is a brilliant actor whose presence on the screen is a pleasure to watch. I’ll be watching.
