Justice for Akira and Leandro: A Fentanyl Ring Brought Down

Justice for Akira Stein and Leandro de Niro Rodriguez

It was a case that united two families who’d lived in different corners of New York’s creative universe — the Steins of Blondie fame and the De Niros of Hollywood royalty — bound not by art or glamour, but by grief.

On October 30, 2025, federal prosecutors announced the arrests of five men accused of running a fentanyl distribution network that led to the deaths of three 19-year-olds: Akira Stein, daughter of musician Chris Stein, Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, grandson of actor Robert De Niro, and a third unnamed teen.

Arrests have been made and announced today in Akira’s case,” Chris Stein wrote on social media. “The DEA, US Attorney folks from the NYC Southern District have been really very sympathetic and respectful all through this process and I can’t thank them enough for this hope of some justice for her. Please be careful.”

A Deadly Digital Pipeline

The indictment, unsealed in Manhattan federal court, reads like a roadmap of how the modern drug trade moves through encrypted apps instead of street corners.

According to prosecutors, Bruce “Tea” Epperson, Eddie Barreto, Grant “Dizzy” McIver, John “John John” Nicolas, and Roy Nicolas built a multi-layered business selling counterfeit oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl.

Their platforms of choice were Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, and Telegram — places where teens scroll, chat, and sometimes seek the thrill of something forbidden. Investigators say the dealers deliberately targeted young users, trading emojis for orders, using disappearing messages to cover their tracks.

Three Promising Lives, One Common Poison

The indictment’s timeline paints a grim picture of a summer when hope and youth collided with one of the deadliest drugs on Earth.

In May 2023, Akira Stein purchased pills from John and Roy Nicolas. She had reportedly suffered non-fatal overdoses before. This time, the counterfeit tablets — disguised as prescription medication — were laced with lethal doses of fentanyl. She was found dead in her family’s downtown Manhattan apartment.

Two weeks later, another 19-year-old, unnamed in the public record, died in midtown after taking a crushed pill from the same network. And in July 2023, Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez — actor, artist, and grandson of Robert De Niro — was found dead in a friend’s apartment after ingesting a pill linked to the same supply chain.

Each of them was 19. Each had unknowingly taken poison disguised as relief.

The Law Strikes Back

DEA Special Agent in Charge Frank Tarentino called the arrests “a fight to save lives.”
“These arrests serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that social media can pose, and of the predators who hide behind screens, looking to exploit our youth,” he said.

U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton described the case as part of an ongoing war against fentanyl in New York:
“The defendants are responsible for causing the overdose deaths of three 19-year-olds… we will bring to justice the dealers and suppliers who push this poison, especially those who target our kids.”

The five accused traffickers — aged between 22 and 29 — now face charges carrying a mandatory minimum of 20 years and up to life in prison. The case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos.

“Please Be Careful”

For Chris Stein, the words carry the weight of a father’s loss and a warning to a generation scrolling through traps disguised as DMs.

“Please be careful,” he wrote — a plea echoing far beyond the rock clubs of New York.

For De Niro’s family, too, the arrests offer only partial solace. In 2023, Robert De Niro released a brief statement after Leandro’s death: “My beloved grandson Leo passed away. We’re deeply distressed by the loss of our beloved Leo.”

Now, more than a year later, there is finally a flicker of accountability.

A New York Tragedy, A National Epidemic

Fentanyl overdoses have become the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 45. The DEA has reported seizing more than 80 million counterfeit pills in 2025 alone — many of them designed to look like common medications such as Percocet or Xanax.

The Stein and De Niro families’ tragedies are emblematic of a crisis that respects no fame, wealth, or address. Behind every headline are parents like Chris Stein — grateful for justice, but wishing for something that justice cannot restore.

As the Southern District’s prosecutors pursue the case, New York’s creative community is left to reckon with a quieter, more personal refrain:
The high-gloss city of art, fashion, and music is still fighting for its children.
