In a bid to provide accurate information about the energy transition to local communities, independent MP Helen Haines has endorsed the concept of Local Energy Hubs. These hubs, proposed by RE-Alliance, would serve as physical information centers staffed by knowledgeable local experts.
Their purpose would be to educate residents about various renewable energy and transmission projects, household and farm electrification, battery storage, electric vehicles, and offshore wind projects.
Local Energy Hubs Inform Communities on Energy Shift
Andrew Bray, National Director of RE-Alliance, emphasized the importance of local experts in combating misinformation. “We’re delighted to see a federal Member of Parliament using their role to champion policy ideas that benefit regional communities,” Bray stated.
“Getting accurate information about local projects into local communities is key to the energy shift, and who better to deliver this information than trusted local faces? Local Energy Hubs will help make the energy shift smoother in regional communities.”
Over the past six months, RE-Alliance, along with partners like the Community Power Agency and Yes 2 Renewables, has been engaging with government MPs and ministers to ensure robust support for regional communities involved in the clean energy transition.
One of their key proposals is the establishment of a federally funded network of 50 independent Local Energy Hubs in areas with significant renewable energy developments and transmission lines. Unfortunately, this initiative was not funded in the recent budget.
RE-Alliance‘s mission is to facilitate an energy transformation that brings long-term benefits and prosperity to regional and rural Australia.
By listening to community needs, fostering collaboration within the renewables industry, and advocating for meaningful engagement, they aim to ensure that the clean energy shift delivers positive social outcomes for all regions involved.
