LUZIA premiered in April 2016 and has since captivated more than 4.5 million spectators around the globe. The name “LUZIA” is a fusion of the Spanish words “luz” (light) and “lluvia” (rain), encapsulating the show’s central themes. Directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, LUZIA invites audiences into an imaginary Mexico, where light quenches the spirit and rain soothes the soul.
A Homecoming for Cirque du Soleil’s Helena Merten
Adding a local touch to this extraordinary show is Queensland’s own Helena Merten, one of the lead artists in LUZIA. Growing up on the Gold Coast, Helena has always dreamt of performing with Cirque du Soleil.
“I’ve dreamt of this since I was seven years old when I saw my first Cirque du Soleil show, QUIDAM, in Brisbane. Now, returning home to Queensland, where it all began, I am beyond excited to perform in front of my hometown crowd,” she shares.
Photographing Circus: A Visual and Artistic Feast
Photographing high speed action in low light is one of the most difficult challenges for a photographer. Using a flash is obviously forbidden as these artists risk their lives for our entertainment. Freezing action under stage lights requires a steady hand, or monopod, and setting the camera at a high ISO. Too high an ISO increases ‘noise’ or grain which reduces sharpness, so most photographers set a 32,000 ISO maximum.
This breathtaking production is the first touring show by Cirque du Soleil to incorporate rain into its acrobatic and artistic scenes, creating a surreal and enchanting atmosphere.
Swiss photographer Anne Colliard does events, weddings, pregnancy and corporate photographic assignments, and her Instagram is here. Amongst all this, Ms Colliard photographs the Paléo Festival de Nyon, an annual rock festival held in Switzerland.
Matt Beard photographer
Photographer Matt Beard’s stunning images capture the essence of LUZIA’s magic, showcasing the performers’ incredible feats against the backdrop of rain and light. These photographs provide a glimpse into the awe-inspiring world that awaits Brisbane audiences.
Cyr Wheel artists perform the unprecedented feat of rolling and spinning under the rain, while an aerialist suspended from a trapeze flies and twirls through pouring showers. Hoop diving is taken to gigantic treadmills, exponentially increasing the speed and daring of the leaps executed.
Jaw-dropping images include a male contortionist skillfully twisting his body into unimaginable positions, a powerful aerial straps specialist defying gravity at the center of a cenote (natural sinkhole), a juggler tossing seven pins at breakneck speed, and two football freestylers deftly mixing street dance with mind-blowing ball manipulation.
Matt Beard is an experienced commercial photographer based in California, working in fashion, music, documentary and commercial assignments. Mr Beard’s website is here and his Instagram showcases his professional photography. Mr Beard fulfills the photographic brief for Cirque du Soleil, providing stunning action photos and the pageantry of these colourful performers.
