Geoffrey Dyer Biography

Born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1947, he has been an exhibiting artist since 1970. Dyer came to prominence after a string of consecutive years as a finalist in the prestigious Archibald Prize. He won the award in 2003 with a painting of his good mate and writer Richard Flanagan, and has been a finalist a further 11 times.

Despite the success in the Archibald, it is Dyer’s landscapes that have defined his place in Australian Art.  Dyer has been a 9-time finalist in the Wynne Prize (add a further 2 showings as a finalist in the Sulman Prize, he is clearly a repeat offender with the critics).

His work is part of many of the major collections domestically including QANTAS, AGNSW, National Australia Bank, Reserve Bank, Price Waterhouse Coopers as well as Private Collections throughout Australia including the important Moorilla Vineyards Collection, in addition his work has seen inclusion in private collections in both Europe and the USA.The last few years have proven incredibly solid for Geoff Dyer – In 2008 his work saw selection in the Glover Prize and the Salon des Refusés.

It was a year that also saw the release of his new retrospective book A Tasmanian Perspective. The 160-page book, launched at Despard Gallery by Tasmanian author Richard Flanagan who attested to his insight into the man behind the paintings, features large full colour plates of Dyer’s paintings of Mt Wellington; his Archibald Prize portraits; Tasmanian landscapes, including West Coast rivers, Ocean Beach, and the south-east coast; as well as a selection of abstract landscapes.

It also includes some of Dyer’s earlier paintings dating back to 1969, family photographs, critiques of his work by Melbourne-based curator Damian Smith and comments by Dyer himself. The prologue by former professor of Australian literature and Rhodes scholar, Peter Pierce, interweaves details of Dyer’s personal life with his artistic influences and professional career.

It describes the artist as one of the latest in a long and eccentric line of writers and painters who have created a specifically Tasmanian romanticism.Dyer’s work was also represented in a major curatorial exhibition at the Guangdong Museum of Art, China, from which – the Museum’s acquisition of a major work is a significant step by Geoff Dyer into the larger public collections internationally. In 2010 Geoff also saw his work exhibited in New York in conjunction with AusTrade.

These milestones, along with a number of successful solo exhibitions here in Australia, are key indicators for an artist who is making his mark on the international stage, the international market is a clear focus for Geoff in the next 10 years. These facts coupled with a controlled output through exhibition are likely to encourage a shift in availability of good works at auction and their respective prices.

Despard Gallery announced the passing Geoff Dyer, one of Tasmania’s most important and celebrated contemporary artists, 8 October 2020.
